Last Days of Summer

Last Days of Summer

Lemon scents linger
from blooms of white magnolia,
while a cool breeze tiptoes,
donned in ornate lace
into a summer dusk cathedral:
I hear the mellow sound of shaken leaves
upon their sun-tanned branches,
harp strings stroked by fingers
of the wind —

The purple grosbeak’s song endures
into the night,
nectared notes delight
as I revel in these ardent days
of crimson apples,
the primrose pulp of aubergine plums,
the musk-white fragrance of orange
the golden cloak of summer’s warmth
upon the vibrant flowers.

  1. Really wish you hadn’t reminded me that summer’s end is not so very far away (but then, I guess it never really is – it’s my favorite time of year). But a beautiful word-painted picture nevertheless…

  2. I love this Dee. I know that feeling ~ that bittersweet goodbye to the cutoffs and the vines taking over the fence ~ goodbye to the feeling of sweat wrapped in summer sheets. But then ~ then there is the Fall. The mere thought of autumn, and my heart drums within my chest so hard it aches. But it’s a good kind of ache for that first (real) day of Fall, when the air is crisp and the leaves are all flaring at the edges and the wind smells just vaguely of smoke. When suddenly I don’t miss the Summer near as much. It’s the undeniable longing for life ~ like the end and the beginning of something all at once. And I suppose that’s exactly what it is…….. Much love, Bobbie

    • Yes, Bobbie, the nice thing about summer’s end is that Fall awaits with its own peculiar wonders. I grew up in a place with an eternal summer, and the first time I experienced Autumn was unforgettable. I love how you describe the longing for life — the end and the beginning of something all at once. And where the two meet, I suppose are where eternal moments dwell. Thank you for such beautiful words, Bobbie! Lotsa love, Dee

      • When I was younger, our seasons were more defined. I miss that. While it’s certainly nice to have an 80 degree day in the mdidle of December, it seems to steal a bit of what December is all about. Over the years, I’ve traveled quite a bit in the northeast US and I truly love the landscape that seasons paint there. However, it is all beautiful…… is everything if we see. Thanks, Dee.
