How many sunsets have I missed
while threading needles,
tending the hearth,
kneading the flour
for our daily bread —
Today
I chanced upon a sunset:
a brilliant bonfire in the sky
of apricot flames,
periwinkle smoke,
while autumnal leaves ripen
for the harvest —
bequeath the gold and rubies
to the children of spring.

Thanks for the encouragement!
Beautiful! I’m delighted you caught this sunset. I can relate. Especially one summer at the sewing machine years ago. Love’s self-sacrifices for Family.
So wonderfully phrased — “Love’s self-sacrifices for Family”. I am picturing your summer at the sewing machine, which must have given you much self-fulfillment. Thank you, Shelley. Dee

May all your sunsets be beautiful.
Thank you, what a lovely blessing, and may all your sunsets be beautiful as well!
Great picture and true words about how the “daily-ness” of the everyday can rob us of beauty and refreshment if we are not intentional in seeking them out. Thanks, Dee.
Yes, beauty and refreshment are all around us to partake of, and indeed, we need to be “intentional in seeking them out”. Thank you, John, for sharing your perspective on this post.
The riches of each day, like jewelled sunsets, are too often missed by our ‘busyness’…a powerful truth, most humbly and beautifully expressed…
How true, Susan, that the riches of each day can only be grabbed within the time span of “today”, and are gone after the day is over. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this post. Blessings, Dee

Regret. Even the end a sort of surrender – all the “plunder,” of sunsets wasted to another generation that will perhaps be wiser?
Wow, Sandy, you have uncovered something new and have taken my intended meaning of these verses to another level. Thank you for this profound interpretation!
What soul waits with compassion every sunset (every sunset) and rises before the birth of another? Our trust is knowing another comes, proof of our patience, proof of eternal love. Let us keep the sun not waiting for our smiles. Love to you, Dee. May your sunset be the sweetest (until tomorrow’s). ~ Ever, Bobbie
I love the beautiful poetry of your words, Bobbie. And may your sunset today be the sweetest, too! Love, Dee
